General guidelines for the Rally

Postby jimfoo » Fri Jul 11, 2008 7:14 am

1. Stay only on trails, routes, and areas designated for off-highway vehicle use.
2. Cross streams only at designated fording points, or where the road crosses the stream.
3. Cross large rocks and other obstacles slowly, at an angle, one wheel at a time. Always know where the differential or lowest point on the vehicle is.
4. Avoid riding in mud. In soft terrain, go easy on the gas to avoid wheel spin, which can cause rutting.
5. Straddle ruts, gullies and washouts even if they are wider than your vehicle.
6. Don’t turn around on narrow roads, steep terrain, or unstable ground. Backup until you find a safe place to turn around.
7. Don’t ride, walk or allow pets to walk in areas with cryptobiotic soil, a dark lumpy, almost burnt looking soil and remember that areas designated as “Wilderness” do not allow motorized vehicles.
8. When winching, attach the towing cable, tree strap or chain as low as possible to the object being winched. Let the winch do the work; never drive the winch.
9. Pack out what you pack in.
10. Practice minimum impact camping by using established sites, camping 200 feet from water resources and trails, and minimizing use of fire.
11. Carry at least 1 gallon of water per person per day.
12. Don't follow the vehicle in front of you too closely, and always keep the vehicle behind you in sight. If you loose sight, stop until they catch up and let the trail leader know you are stopping. Wait for the vehicle in front of you to get up an obstacle before you try. If they have a problem, you could be in the way.
13. When stopping for any reason, pull off the trail so other vehicles may pass.
14. When possible and safe, allow faster vehicles to pass.(ATV's, motorcycles as well)
15. Give the right of way to hikers/bikers.
16. Make sure you always carry any needed medication on the trail with you. Things can happen, greatly delaying trail times.
17. Make sure your vehicle has good recovery points, and that you have and know how to use recovery gear.
18. Have a CB preferably, or FRS radio.
19. Most trails are long. You will need to carry lunch with you. Make sure you have all needed food, water and gas before lining up for trails each day. Trail lineups will start at 8:00 each day, and most trails will leave at 8:30, with some very long ones(Golden Spike) leaving earlier, and some with 2 groups will have the 2nd group leave later.(Poison Spider, Fins N Things)
20. If you see trash, please pick it up even if it's not yours. Keeping trails in good shape helps keep them open.
21. The trail leader is the only one who should be spotting. An exception is if you have someone else you personally want to spot for you. Please don't spot someone without being asked.
